The Study Group on Educational Policy and Teaching Work of the Faculty of Education of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (GESTRADO / UFMG), with the support of the Secretariat of Basic Education of  Ministry of Education (MEC), presents the Dictionary “Work, profession and teaching condition”. The purpose of this Dictionary is to gather the terms used in research on this theme, defining their meanings, seeking to contribute to the analysis of the changes that occurred in teaching work in contemporary society. This Dictionary is a collective work, contemplating a great diversity of approaches and theoretical perspectives, adding 380 authors from 17 different countries, who developed the entries from their specialties, thus contributing to the production of knowledge about the work in Education. The invitations to the authors were determined by their academic competence and excellence in the study of the term/concept intended for them, which gives great magnitude to this work. The Dictionary was developed as one of the products of the research “Teaching work in Basic Education in Brazil”, conducted in 2009 and 2010. The research aimed to analyze teaching work in its constitutive dimensions, identifying its actors, what they do and under what conditions they carry out their activities in elementary schools in Brazil. It sought to know the changes promoted by the recent public policies for Basic Education in Brazil regarding the organization and school management and its consequences for the formation and the teaching career, observing also their consequences on the health and well-being of the teachers. The purpose of the Dictionary was to identify concepts and terms used in research and studies on work, profession and teaching status, disseminating them in the academic community as well as in educational systems. This publication reflects the growth of studies and research on teaching work carried out in different academic and union institutions in different countries around the world, especially in Latin America.
